FOUR people, including an employee of the Bank of Uganda, were yesterday rushed to Mulago and Rubaga hospitals in critical condition after their saloon car collided head-on with a Fuso truck, report Solomon Muyita and Gilbert Kadilo.
The accident occurred at Kikandwa on Wakaliga Road, Kampala, at 7.45am.
The truck, registration no. 220 UCJ, loaded with charcoal, collided with a Nissan Skyline car No. UAB 053F.. Both vehicles were burnt. The Police Fire Brigade arrived at the scene too late to save the vehicles.
Susan Lukwago, the Bank of Uganda employee, was travelling to work from Nsangi, on Masaka Road. Her son, Ronald Katumba, drove the vehicle. In the car were Dorah Nakamatte and her four-year old daughter, Nankya Natasha.
Gabriel Tibayungwa, the regional traffic officer Kampala Extra, told The New Vision that the truck lost control while trying to dodge a pot-hole and rammed onto the salon car.
"The truck had been dangerously loaded with charcoal and matoke. It's occupants, including the driver, had run away, leaving it burning and its merchandise scattered all over the road," Tibayungwa said.
Dr Tendo Nsereko of Rubaga Hospital described the conditions of Lukwago and Katumba as stable. He, however, said Nakamatte and her daughter, who sustained head injuries, had to be transferred to Mulago Hospital for intensive care.
Lukwago, who spoke from her hospital bed, their lives were saved by seat belts which kept them on their seats despite the impact.
