THE Carnegie Corporation of New York, America, has given Makerere Unive-rsity a grant of US$2m to implement the university's reform plan.
Part of the money will be used to study the effects of rapid student increase on the university's academic quality.
A statement from Carnegie yesterday said the three-year grant would be used to overhaul the university under a five-year development programme.
"The university has increased enrollment in the last decade and tightened administrative procedures while offering more flexibility to faculty," the statement said.
This grant will enable Makerere leadership to focus on improving the environment for teaching, learning, research and publications," said the statement.
It said other programmes to be implemented using the grant include provision of scholarships for female undergraduates and intensive training for faculties.
The grant will also facilitate the training of librarians and restocking of science faculty libraries and creation of a distance learning bac-helor's degree course for mathematics and science teachers.
It said other donors are, the Rockefeller Foundation and the Norwegian Agency for International Develo-pment.
