By Leo Kabunga THE national cricket team that finished ninth at the ICC Trophy in Canada, were yesterday voted sportsmen of the month of July by Uganda Sports Press Association (USPA). After the cricketers tied at 455 votes with the two gold medal winners at the inaugural Africa women’s boxing championship, USPA’s monthly meeting chairman Joseph Kabuleta cast the deciding vote. The Ugandan cricketers, who were making their debut on the mini-World Cup stage, beat Malaysia, Argentina, France, East Africa and Israel before falling to former winners UAE in the play-offs. Kenneth Kamyuka was the most talked about cricketer after the event in Toronto, in which Uganda’s efforts as the most indigenous side captivated the world. Uganda team of two boxers Florence Nalukwago and Irene Namakula collected two gold medals inspite of poor preparations. USPA members observed that the national cricket team put the country on the world cricket map with its historic performance having been ranked second last of 24-nations. Sports scribes also commended Lukanga boxing team for coming second in the Bingwa-wa Mabingwa in Tanzania. Also hailed were Kings Cup winners the Bombers, KAVC women and rally ace Moses Lumala. ends
