CONTROVERSY over the status of Kampala University has deepened with the new proprietor changing the name to Kampala International University, reports John Eremu.

CONTROVERSY over the status of Kampala University has deepened with the new proprietor changing the name to Kampala International University, reports John Eremu. Premises housing the disputed Kampala University were a week ago sold to Hajji Hassan Basajjabalaba and extensive renovation was going on yesterday when The New Vision visited the campus at Kansanga, a suburb of Kampala. The university under the new name yesterday placed advertisements in the press inviting students to register for the academic year beginning October 2001. But the commissioner for higher education, Mr. Yeko Acato, warned that the new university was neither registered nor licensed by the ministry. He said the change of name from Kampala University to Kampala International University was illegal. But the new administrators said the new university will offer professional courses in management, information technology, the sciences, arts and social sciences. “A new university called Kampala International University has been opened by a team of professional experts headed by Dr. George Ayee from Ghana, Prof. Mwene Mushanga, former ambassador to Austria, Germany and the Vatican, and Kassim Basajjabalaba, a lecturer at the Institute of Teacher Education Kyambogo,” the adverts said. The university at Kansanga, is 3km from the city centre. Ends
