THE new Kampala International University has formally been registered as a limited liability company.
Records at the Registrar of Companies office indicate that the disputed institution was registered on Monday with seven directors and a share capital of sh100m.
The majority shareholder is Mrs. Shamim Basajjabalaba, wife of business tycoon, Hassan Basajjabalaba. She holds 40 shares of sh1m each.
The other shareholders are Basajjabalaba Hides and Skins (BHS) and Haba Group Limited, each with 10 shares and Basajjabalaba’s uncle Hajji Abbas Kangave with 13 shares. Basajjabalaba’s brothers, Kassim and Nasser, hold 10 and seven shares.
Prof. Mwene Mushanga, recently appointed among the top university administrators, also has 10 shares.
Nasser is the Western Youth MP while Kassim was a lecturer at the Institute of Teacher Education, Kyambogo.
But Education ministry spokesman Aggrey Kibenge said on Tuesday that Kampala International University had not yet lodged an application with them and that it must first be licensed by the ministry before it could legally operate. He said the only university they recognise in Kansanga is Kampala University. “The registration with the Registrar of Companies has nothing to do with the running of educational institutions,†Kibenge said.
“That registration does not give them authority to run an academic institution of that magnitude,†he said.
