A Hajjat amused a crowd which was waiting for Colonel Muammar Gaddafi in Mbarara early last month. Why are you waiting so zealously as if you are waiting to see Jesus Christ the son of God?†she asked.
Immediately, Godwin Mugisha, a businessman responded, “Have you ever seen people waiting to see Jesus?†This question made the crowd roar with laughter.
The Hajjat did not answer back but also continued laughing with the others. The immense crowd stood for four hours on both sides of Mbarara High Street, enthusiastically waiting for the Colonel.
These excited people who were holding posters and green flags of Uganda and Libya respectively, stormed the street at 2:00pm. They persisted up to 6:00pm when Gaddafi passed by. Police remained at the scene, barring people from stepping on the main road and prohibiting vehicles from passing through.
All vehicles from both sides were directed to use Makhan Singh Street, just opposite Mbarara High Street. No driver was allowed to park on the heavily guarded High Street.
However, colour posters of Gaddafi were pinned on every electric pole. Some sign posts in Mbarara town, carrying messages praising Gaddafi were all over the place. Gaddafi’s posters were on top of Museveni’s.
