PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni has appointed Prof. Timothy Wangusa of Makerere University as Presidential Adviser on Literary Affairs.
Wangusa, a former minister of education in the Okello-Okello transition government and former National Resistance Council member for Bubulo County, Mbale district, is a lecturer in the university’s department of literature.
He replaces Mary Karooro Okurut, also former lecturer at the university. Karooro, was promoted to presidential adviser.
Wangusa was appointed two weeks ago.
Wangusa retired from Makerere last week to take up his new duties.
At Wangusa’s farewell function on Saturday, Oswald Ndoleriire, the Dean of the Faculty of Arts at the university, said Wangusa had served Makerere for the last 32 years.
The function was also organised to congratulate five Faculty of Arts lecturers who have just completed their PhD studies.
The function was held in Busega at the home of Dr. Hannington Ssengendo, the Associate Dean of the Faculty of Arts.
The lecturers are Dr. Ernest Okello, Dr. Mercy Mirembe, Dr. Sylvia Nannyonga-Tamusuza, Dr. Jessica A. Kaahwa, and Dr. Paddy Musana.
Ndolerire said Wangusa’s appointment showed that Museveni valued the role that literary arts play in the development of the country. Wangusa said he would discuss with Museveni the possibility of advising him on all arts rather than just literature.
