By Harry Sagara Property magnate Sudhir Ruparelia is now preparing East Africa’s biggest resort for the 2001 edition of the Royal Ascot Goat Races at Speke Resort, Munyonyo. “Why don’t you come to Munyonyo on that day and see for yourself, it’s going to be the ultimate fun,” Sudhir told this writer before dashing for the SMART dialogue last week. For those who were not at Munyonyo for last years goat race, make sure you go this time. A diverse number of corporate companies erect tents where booze, music and eats flow. We are talking of such reputable companies like B.A.T, Ruparelia Group of Companies, Wavah group of Companies, British Airways, MTN and Celtel. The goats come dressed in T-shirts with numbers inscribed on them. They also have such names as Billy, Harry, Makumbi or even Ssebanga! The goat owners actually bet loads of money on which goat is going to win the race. As that transpires, the crowds, dressed in eyebrow raising attire, are milling around while sampling some of the rarest cocktails ever. It’s basically one big party! One of the organisers of this year’s race tells me that what people saw last year was nothing compared to what will take place on September 1. The concept of the Royal Ascot goat races was borrowed from Britain where the Royal Ascot race takes place annually. In Britain, they use horses for the races, but since there are hardly horses in Uganda, goats have to act as substitutes. Goat races are very popular in Trinidad and Tobago. Ends
