SIR—It was reported in The New Vision that the Government will soon
start centres, where anti-retroviral drugs (drugs which prolong and improve the lives of HIV-postive people) will be supplied to those who can afford.
In Mulago Hospital, nevirapine, a drug that reduces the risk of infection of babies by positive mothers, is about to expire, according to the Director Mulago Hospital, Dr Lawrence Kaggwa.
I now recommend to the Ministry of Health that before drugs for HIV are delivered to
concerned institutions, the number of people who can afford, in a defined distance to be served, must be estimated.
Otherwise, it beats understanding to procure expensive drugs and let them expire.
