Stolen drugs!

SIR—I react to Dr Frank Mwesigye’s letter to the editor “We in the medical profession say doctors are not thieves” in Monday’s New Vision. At the rate of 100 doctors produced per year, you need 20 years to produce 2,000 doctors to be able to cope with Uganda’s 20 million. Yet some doctors leave for greener pastures abroad while others die off and some of those who stay end up not practising medicine at all. I know five doctors who can never touch a patient. I also know of one drug called pethidine which is always stolen from Mulago Hospital. One thing about stealing is that it is only unethical when you get caught! Moses Gava, Kampala
