THE Windsor Lake Victoria Hotel, Entebbe has sacked 76 workers over a strike that paralysed business there for two weeks.
Geoffrey Kamali reports that the workers were ordered to re-apply for jobs in a notice on the hotel’s noticeboard. An official said the sacked workers would be paid their packages.
Fifty workers, who had been living in the hotel’s houses in Kitooro, were ordered to vacate by yesterday or be forced out.
But the workers said they would not re-apply for their jobs, saying they had worked for the hotel for many years.
“We’ve been working for the hotel for so many years. There is a way to solve such problems through the union,†said Peace Mwambu, the workers’ union leader.
Some 100 workers went on strike 17 days ago, saying a 4% salary rise was low and long overdue.
