THE Bishop of northern Uganda, the Rev. Nelson Onono Onweng, has been awarded the UNESCO 2001 peace education prize, reports Caroline Lamwaka.
a press release from UNESCO mailed through Kacokke Madit indicated that Onono was awarded the peace prize with the Jewish-Arab centre for peace at Givat Haviva, Israel after a recommendation from the UNESCO headquarters last week.
The release said in selecting Onono and the Jewish-Arab centre for peace, the jury sought to highlight “the exceptional efforts of the two winners in the areas of peace and non-violence and to reward the work done for the resolution through dialogue.â€
The prize for peace education started 20 years ago to promote actions that focus on public awareness and mobilisation in favour of peace.
