Why is Katakwi such a big problem?

SIR—The situation in Katakwi district is really worrying. The Karimojong are literally on rampage. Worse still the UPDF seems to have halted the disarmament process for a while. The Iteso are desperate they have nobody to run to. As a result they have decided to take the law in their hands. I suggest the Government involves Kenyan armed forces in this process of disarmament. After all, the Pokot have the same lifestyle as the Karimojong. Unless the Government takes quick measures to contain the Karimojong terrorism in Teso, we could see an escalation of violence and insecurity in that region. Since the Uganda Government has ratified the East African Community, it is in order to call in troops from Kenya Tanzania to deal with the Karimojong. This song, lack of money, lack of money, is not going to help. E.F. Kahuma, Fort Portal SIR—Once more the Iteso are faced with the insurmountable odds of dealing with the Karimojong. Blood has continued to flow in Teso. Conscience is therefore required to recognise the plight of the victims of this suffering. The emotions we have been experiencing in the recent past are as a result of what seems to be government reluctance to address the conflict. Please, Government, we demand good governance: love, care and protection from the Karimojong. Come out with a clear policy statement, condemning those criminal acts unleashed against the Iteso, and what action you are to follow and when. Patrick Oputan, Kampala
