FAGIL Mandy, the Acting Director of the Education Standards Agency (ESA) is set to retire from the civil service at the end of next month.
Sources say Mandy, 53, tendered his resignation letter to the Education Service Commission (ESC) three months ago. He is expected to retire on October 31.
“Everybody is surprised. Nobody knows why he is leaving before he reaches retirement age,†said a ministry source.
Mandy told Education Vision that he decided to quit the civil service to begin a new life in the private sector. “I feel I should leave to start something different. I have had 15 years years of continuous service in the education sector and it is high time I started life in the private sector,†he said.
He said that he will among things, set up an educational consultancy.
Mandy joined the civil service in 1971 as a teacher. He rose through the ranks to become a district education officer (DEO) in several districts. He later served as District Administrator (now referred to as Resident District Commissioners) in Tororo and Kabarole districts.
He re-joined the ministry of education in November 1994 as deputy commissioner for education. He later became commissioner for inspection before becoming acting director of ESA.
The Education Service Commission is yet to recruit Mandy’s replacement.
