A Rakai pilot project, under the Lake Victoria Environment Management Programme, has planted 110,000 trees to prevent environmental degradation.
Chris Kasamba, the project coordinator of the afforestation catchment programme, revealed this recently at the scientific conference on Lake Victoria held at Colline Hotel, Mukono.
The trees were this year planted on the bare hills in Kifamba sub-county by local communities in Kisaasa and Nyanga-Kentale.
Kasamba said the programme will sensitise the communities on better ways of planting the trees.
“We empowered the communities with skills to raise the tree seedlings, how to plant and care for them,†Kasamba said.
He said the trees would increase productivity of the areas because they yield fodder for animals.
