By Moses Nampala Prison authorities at Kirinya Prison in Jinja district have asked the office of the Director for Public Prosecution to list inmates, who had been on remand for long to take them to court. John Bosco Tumwebaze, the officer in charge of Kirinya main remand Prison, said on Friday that many suspects charged with capital offenses had been on remand since 1995. He was meeting inmates during the launching of ‘chain linked initiative’ at Jinja Magistrate Court Hall. The initiative was aimed at clearing co-ordination, cooperation and communication network among the stakeholders in the criminal justice system. It constituted representatives from the judiciary, Police, Prison and civil leaders. Tumwebaze said some of the suspects’ cases had not fully been judged. “Other categories of inmates who have been incarcerated for long, are suspects who were once committed to High Court, and their cases were partly heard but since then, their fate has not been known because their files were not completed,” he said. Tumwebaze asked prison authorities to enlist the affected inmates and submit the list to the resident state attorney.
