NTARE School in Mbarara has been closed following a violent strike on Tuesday in which students stoned teachers and the Police and destroyed property, reports Allan Turyaguma. Sources at the school on Thursday said a staff crisis management meeting held on Tuesday evening resolved to send the students home as they awaited the outcome of the board of governors meeting. “Staff saw it wise to send the students home before they could become more violent and cause more havoc,” the source said. The students, who were guarded by the anti-riot Police reportedly broke loose at night and destroyed some equipment in the science laboratory. They also invaded the house of one of the deputy headmasters, Elijius Birindwarugaba, and broke his windowpanes. The strike was allegedly sparked off by the school administration decision to expel a Senior Four student, Abraham Asiimwe, for abusing a teacher. In their memorandum, the students demanded for Birindwarugaba’s removal from office before they could resume classes. Ends
