THE Ministry of Education and Sports has allowed Kampala International University to go ahead with its operations for the academic year 2001/2002, reports Kezio D. Musoke.
In a letter to Vice-Chancellor William Rigby, the education ministry permanent secretary, F.X. Lubanga, said, “I register the pleasure of the ministry with your technical proposal and the physical infrastructure of the university. Both these very important elements appear to meet the minimum requirements and standards for the issuance of a licence.â€
“The ministry therefore has no hesitation in encouraging you to proceed with the promotional and operational activities that will give it ahead start in its operations for the university academic year 2001/2002,†Lubanga added.
Copies of the letter were sent to the Minister of Education, the Minister of State for Higher Education, and the Commissioner for Higher Education.
The temporary licence comes a week after the university registered over 700 students with more than 50 resident students.
However, Lubanga said the university has to submit its application for a licence to operate in accordance with the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act 2001 section 96(1) and (2).
The university was required to get a temporary licence from the Ministry of Education because the National Council of Higher Education, a body which authorises universities to operate is not yet in instituted. It is to be launched by the end of this month. The university spokesman, Odrek Rwabogo, said the go-ahead is a final and most important step for the institution considering the efforts “the management had put in place to give the students the most satisfying business education environment in the last 10 months.â€
“We would like to inform all our students that teaching begins on Monday October 8. The university has a modern computer laboratory with over 100 personal computers, 20 lecturers and high-skill consultants in business, education and information technology,†he said.
Rwabogo said the universirty has international links with over 15 Commonwealth universities.
