About 20 suspects in Fort Portal Police Station escaped after digging a hole in the cell on Friday.
The suspects, most of whom were from Kamwenge, and Kyenjojo, reportedly took advantage of a lapse in the monitoring by police guards who were on night duty.
“I was in Mbarara at the time but definitely the policemen on duty failed to follow our points on being alert,†the DPC, Francis Tumushabe, said on Tuesday. He said stern action would be taken against those responsible for the mess.
The suspects dug a hole in the cell but it was not established whether they had tools. Those who escaped icluded John Kiiza, Matia Nutegezi, M. Turyatunga, Godfrey Assimwe, Ivan Bigirwa, Edward Rugumayo, Moses Nyakahuma, Sylvester Kabona, Jackson Muhwezi, David Bagonza, Francis Bulera, Frank Isingoma and Samuel Balinda.
