SIR—The habit of borrowing pens in banking halls, the post office and other public places is on the increase. Smart ladies and gentlemen who have whatever they need around them in their day-to-day life except a pen, signal for a pen when they want to sign somewhere. Those who remember to carry their pens along are usually inconvenienced by these rude beggars who simply demand by signals as if it is a right to be lent a pen. They don’t even seem to return the courtesy as they don’t say “thank you” and often disappear with the pen if the owner does not demand it back. Give-away-price pens like Nice, Bic, among others, are in plenty on the streets. So the habit should be fought by ignoring the rude beggars. Henry Akiiki-Mugisa Kampala
