World Food Programme (WFP) regional great lakes and country representative offices, will soon move from Ruth Towers to a new building adjacent to the UNDP offices in Kampala.
The newly appointed director for East and Central African Region, Ms. Judith Lewis said this while presenting her credentials to the Foreign Affairs Minister, James Wapakhabulo, in Kampala on August 10.
“I will invite you and the President (Yoweri Museveni) to bless our new offices very soon,†said Lewis who is in charge of the region which covers 15 countries.
WFP said in May that Uganda was chosen as a regional headquarters for various reasons which include among others “suitability for staff and families and favourable terms offered by the Government for the site and building.
Accompanied by her Deputy, Nicholas Siwingwa, and Country Director, Burkard Oberle, Lewis said she moved from her previous posting in Ethiopia to Kampala in August.
Waphakhabulo praised WFP for choosing Uganda as the regional headquarters.
“I will be grateful to come at the occasion of the opening of the office,†he said.
In May, the WFP announced decentralisation of its regional bureaus, which include Africa, Asia, Middle East and Latin America.
In Africa, Uganda hosts the East and Southern Africa regional office while Cameroon and Senegal host the Central and Western offices respectively.
