SIR—This is to appeal to the Minister of Local Government, Mr Jaberi Bidandi Ssali, to probe urgently the gross misuse of the tax-payers’ money by the leadership in Wakiso district. Local councillors in Wakiso are paid sh500,000 per month plus a monthly sitting allowance of sh150,000. Sitting on sub-committees, a member goes home with sh150,000 per sitting. These payments are far above the statutory stipends of councillors in the country. There is strong suspicion of diversion of funds intended for prioritised programmes to the payment of such colossal sums of money to councillors and their chairman. The award of tenders in Wakiso district leaves a lot to be desired. The chairman uses this avenue to gain support. Thorough investigations should be made in these matters and at the same time assessment is needed to prove whether the premises for the headquarters cost sh52m to partition and furnish.
