KING’S College Budo is taking Wole Soyinka’s hilarious comedy, The Lion and the Jewel to the National Theatre on October 31 November 1 2001. This is a set play that will benefit the Senior Four Candidates tremendously. Two shows are expected per day, one at 10:00 am and the other at 2:00 pm. Soyinka presents the village chief Baroka (the Lion) and the village beauty Sidi (the Jewel). Baroka stands firmly for traditional African culture but his views contrast sharply with those of Lakunle, the village schoolteacher. The solid traditionalist outwits the misguided modernist in a race for the village beauty. The lessons to learn are immense, treated in human, irony and imagery. Meet Soyinka at his best. The writers are S5A students at King’s College Budo. ends
