By Ahmed Angulibo Arua LC5 Secretary for Education and Sports, Mrs. Rita Popo, has disclosed that Ministry of Education and Sports has allowed Muni National Teachers College (NTC) in Arua district to continue offering both Arts and Science courses. Popo said this recently during the third sitting of the fourth session of the district council. The session, held at Arua Social centre for two days, was presided over by the district Speaker, Mr. Cyril Eriku. Popo said the decision was reached after negotiations by Arua district and Muni NTC leaders. She thanked them for the struggle and criticised those who wanted to sabotage their aspirations. However, the district finance committee chairman, who is also the Dean of Students of Muni NTC, Kokas Abiku, said the college will start offering only Arts courses in 2003, in line with the restructuring process of the Ministry of education. In September, students from over 20 schools in Arua had planned a demonstration to protest the removal of Science courses at Muni NTC but called it off following a phone call reportedly from Kampala saying the matter had been addressed by President Yoweri Museveni. During the council session, the members resolved that the Dutch support fund and conditional funds be approved by the finance committee or council before it is used in order to minimise the frequent movement of the district executives.
