By Fred Kaweesi VILLA’S leading striker Maurice Sunguti says he will turn his back on Ugandan football at the end of next season. “The decision has been taken that I will be leaving the club and will have no further involvement in African Club football,” Sunguti,24, told The New Vision this week. The Kenyan international intends to sever links with Villa and turn professional outside Africa. The Kenyan is the the Nile Special Super League’s second leading striker with 23 goals. Express’ Hassan Mubiru leads with 27. Sunguti revealed he always dreamed of playing alongside then KCC superstar Jackson Mayanja. “The first time I saw him (Mayanja) play. I developed a lot of admiration. He was indeed one of the factors that attracted me to Ugandan football,” he said. “Uganda’s football is not as physical compared to the game played in Kenya. Perhaps that is one of the reasons I find scoring easy here — the fans are really soccer mad,” he said. Sunguti joined Villa from Express. Meanwhile, 13-time league champions are already planning to strengthen their side for the 2002 season. Coach Paul Edwin Hasule revealed he will spend heavily. “I will definitely recruit massively this time because it makes no sense winning locally and faltering internationally,” said Hasule. “If it means going foreign I will do it. We shouldn’t be carried away with what we are achieving at the moment.” He stressed he will consider himself a good coach only if he makes it into the African champions league group stage. ends
