By Ahmed Mukiibi The Minister for the Presidency, Prof. Gilbert Bukenya, has lashed out at those agitating for the halt of the re-development of the Constitution Square (former City Square) project calling them anti-modernisation. “I hear people who totally don’t know any thing about planning also shouting. These people should keep-off and leave the responsibility of developing Kampala to those concerned,” Bukenya remarked yesterday. He said the responsibility of developing Kampala City was the responsibility of the Mayor, his council and the city Planners who he said should be given a chance. He said the green belt and the monument at the Constitution Square would remain after the re-development project. Bukenya’s remarks come in the wake of ethics and integrity minister, Maria Matembe’s letter to the Mayor of Kampala, John Ssebaana Kizito, in which she expressed dissatisfaction with the project and called for thorough discussions with other Government officials. The Minister for Local Government, Bidandi Ssali, also expressed disapproval over the project recently. The National Environment Management Authority has demanded for an environment impact assessment report on the project. Ends
