AN oven that uses three pieces of firewood to roast half a pig has been invented.
The idea of the energy – saving oven came from Kenya and was developed by the Uganda Renewable Energy Development Centre, an NGO that promotes applicable technologies that have been scientifically proven.
“We identify the technology through research then we promote it,†says Mark Ejangu the co-ordinator of the centre.
The roaster looks like an oven and has racks inside that have space to allow the meat get the heat from the firewood.
The inside is insulated with a mixture of virmulite dust, cement and Sand. The insulation is to ensure that the roaster does not lose heat.
The first section of the oven is for roasting while the second section is for storage and ensuring that the roasted meat is totally ready for consumption.
For hygiene purposes, the top of the stove is made up of stainless steal. This is to ensure that the meat being prepared is kept dustless and the stove clean.
About six sticks of meat can be roasted in the invented oven. The firewood is placed beneath the oven on the left-hand side.
There is an ashtray below the firewood to collect the ash.
The oven costs about sh.200, 000 and can be found in the Lugogo Show ground during the show.
