Brian Okumu halted s Chris Musaazi’s four-year dominance of squash by winning the MTN Open at Kampala Club on Saturday.
The 17-year-old, who is also a badminton star, completed a remarkable week by registering a straight set 15-14 15-13 17-15 victory.
Okumu made seasoned Musaazi look a novice at the game for long spells in the match.
The teenager played game for game, delivering good deep shots and his retrieving was picture perfect.
To clinch the title Okumu and Musaazi where tied at deuce in the third set, then Okumu asked the referee Godwin Kahangi for three games
He wrapped it up with a blistering shot to send the galary wild.
“Musaazi was a really tough opponent and I am overwhelmed with this win,†Okumu said after the game.
“I was very confident and I really trained hard for this tournament.â€
Musaazi on his part said: “He is an improved player, but he has not reached there yetâ€.
In the plate final, another youngster Isa Seremba beat Tendo Nsereko 15-13 (11-15) 15-10 (8-15) 15-3.
The week-long event attracted 32 players.
MTN Uganda has promised to continue sponsoring the event, that was the only event of the outgoing USRA executive this year.
