TWO civilians were killed and another person seriously injured at a funeral in Pabbo protected camp, 24 km on Gulu Atiak road on Sunday night.
The UPDF 4th Division commander, Col. Geoffrey Muheesi, denied allegations that it was his soldiers who killed the civilians. But sources within the camp said suspected UPDF soldiers allegedly opened fire on the civilians.
The district councillor of Pabbo sub-county, Odoc Athi P’Obol-Jok, who is also the district finance secretary, confirmed the incident. He said the incident took place at about 1:00am at zone A.
Local sources at Pabbo identified the dead as Samuel Ojok of Patiko in Aswa county and Quinto.
“I don’t think our soldiers can just go berserk and open fire and kill civilians like that. Those must be some small group of the rebels of the Lord’s Resistance Army under field commander Latin Kwo-yello, who are hiding in Kilak,†Muheesi said.
But Odoch said there are normally individual soldiers who misbehave.
Muheesi said Kwo-yello and his group had been defeated by the UPDF and had resorted to attacking soft targets.
