SIR—I understand some doctors have suggested that HIV-positive people should be identified so as to curb HIV infection. It is unbelievable that doctors in the 21st century can come up with such a suggestion. Apart from the ethical questions it raises, how is the exercise to be carried out? Will infected people be made to wear uniforms or bells around their necks? Are HIV-infected people less decent than their uninfected peers that they should be treated like rabid dogs? As I write, I know eight doctors off the cuff who are HIV-positive. There is nothing to distinguish them from their fellow doctors.
