Environmental Protection and Economic Development (EPED) Project is carrying out environmental management and economic development activities in the districts of Masindi and Nakasongola. EPED Project is funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and implemented by ACDI/VOCA, an international non-profit organisation.
In collaboration with the District Local Governments of Masindi and Nakasongola, EPED Project has designed a sustainable charcoal licensing, production and marketing system. The system is now ready for implementation.
As part of the implementation plan, an illustrated charcoal manual (mainly for semi-illiterate charcoal producers) needs to be produced and widely circulated. The manual should:
- Have as many illustrations as possible and very limited text.
- Cover the whole production process, from felling of trees, cross-cutting of logs, stacking of wood, covering of kilns, charcoal harvesting, post-harvest quality maintenance, marketing, and recommended dressing for charcoal production and handling (Ergonomic considerations).
- Cover both traditional earth and modern kilns.
- Be in English, Runyoro, Luganda and Kiswahili.
