TINGEY county MP, Stephen Chebrot’s recent declaration that he has assets worth sh3b, has landed him into trouble with his South African creditor after he had bargained for a reduction in court costs.
Umlaba Holdings has renewed its demand of its pound of flesh, saying Chebrot, the former labour minister, had misled it to believe he was cash-strapped. He is required to pay sh273m to the company.
Chebrot told reporters last week that his assets include land, houses in Kampala and sawmills in Kapchorwa. He however refused to disclose the exact number and location of his houses in Kampala.
He said he could not be sent to a civil prison because he is not bankrupt.
He also said he could not hide as reported in the media because he owns many assets.
The amount stems from a court case he lost to the company after he failed to pay a balance he owed to the company.
