ONE suspected robber was burnt to death by a mob in Kangulumira, Kayunga district and police recovered four guns from other suspects who were arrested.
The district police commander, Peter Omalinga, who led the operation on Saturday, identified the deceased as William Sizomu Muwanga, 30, of Kizawuli village.
He said an angry mob hunted him out of a forest along the banks of River Sezibwa where he was hiding after hearing that his colleagues had been netted.
Omalinga said the guns recovered included an AK 47 No. 4406 with seven bullets. The gun was stolen from Sgt. J. Kiyuba of Ntenjeru government prison last month.
The other three guns were sub-machine guns (SMGs) recovered from Bukoloto village during a police operation following tip-offs by the residents.
During the operation, three men, suspected of being part of a gang terrorising Kayunga, were arrested. The suspects were identified as Juma Sebbi alias Lucky Dube in whose house the AK 47 gun was found. The others were Ali Mande Omongin and Juma Bidda.
Omalinga said the trio was also found with suspected stolen items that included mattresses, beds, radio cassette players and two car jacks that the suspects were said to be using as toy guns in their robbery missions.
He said the suspects admitted that they had used the AK 47 gun in several robbery missions and in the killing of a veterinary officer, Dr. Geoffrey Kiyimba, who was waylaid and killed last month as he returned from duty at Lusenke government farm in Busana, Kayunga district.
Omalinga, who paid tribute to the residents for volunteering information that assisted the police in its work, said the trio also revealed that they were in the process of taking the guns to Kenya for use in robbery activities.
Sgt.Kiyuba is being detained in Kayunga police station following the theft of the gun from him and may be prosecuted. -ENDS ITEM—
