SIR— We former workers of Kampala City Council retrenched in 1994 would like to express our discontent to the town clerk about the way our retrenchment top-up is handled by some Kampala
City City officials and the leaders of the 1994 retrenched staff committee because what was resolved by the finance and
administration committee
is no longer being followed.
The following is typical:
- That payment of former workers names to be put in alphabetical order and to be paid accordingly.
This is not followed
nowadays; names are
picked at random depending on one’s relationship with
those shortlisting people
to be paid!
- As retrenches, we resolved that since our leaders might have incurred some costs
during our struggle to make KCC pay our package
difference, 15% rate deducted from our packages by KCC administration.
But to our surprise besides that surcharge one to be put
on the pay list a person has
to pay between sh50,000
and sh100,000 to our leaders since they are the ones who hold the yam and the knife
as well.
And after getting your bank draft, by the time you reach
the bank, you meet again our leaders waiting for you, demanding for money ranging from sh100,000 to sh200,000.
- In essence, it is the leaders and some officials who are
benefiting at the expense of
the retrenchees.
