SIR— It is with deepest regret that we recently lost that very distinguished lady, Mrs Rebecca Mulira, in a tragic road accident. It is well-known and well-documented that Rebecca Mulira was indeed a unique woman right from her birth. She contributed a great deal towards the advancement of women in Uganda through leadership of such organisations as the multi-cultural Uganda Council of Women, the Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) and Family Planning Association of Uganda. It is quite possible that were it not for the efforts of women like her and her colleagues, Uganda would not have had a woman vice-president today. Among her numerous contributions, she was at one time a councillor in Kampala City Council and Mengo Municipality as well as being on the boards of National Housing Corporation, Housing Finance Company, Mulago Hospital and many others. The purpose of narrating all this is to propose that relevant authorities should name one of Kampala’s roads in her memory. After all, so many of Kampala’s roads have been named after people or things that do not mean much to Ugandans. Paul Nabekunda Cape Town, South Africa
