By Sidonah Kyomugasho Third-year students at Makerere University were left baffled recently when they discovered that a colleague had lied to them about losing his daughter. At the close of last semester, the student, Bariyo, proudly told his friends about a daughter he had fathered two years previously. He told them that the girl was staying with her mother and relatives. Earlier last term when Bariyo found himself penniless, he did the regrettable telling his colleagues that his daughter had died. Bariyo said he needed money for burial arrangements. Moreover, he said, his in-laws were demanding a fine for raising the now dead daughter. Playing the part of true friends, Bariyo's colleagues contributed generously, raising sh67,000 in condolences. Bariyo assured them that he was leaving for Kainamo in Bushenyi District as soon as possible to make burial arrangements. You can imagine the shock of Bariyo's colleagues when they met him that evening too drunk to pronounce his name - let alone explain why he hadn't left for the burial. Bariyo's outraged friends refused to listen to his stammers and starts. They demanded the immediate return of their condolence contributions. Having already spent the money, Bariyo had no choice but to come clean. It seems Bariyo decided to deceive his friends after he found himself broke earlier this month and in need of money for bilquin or 'Kasese waragi' as his friends called it. He is still in hiding both to avoid his friends and repaying the money. Ends.
