Muslim community elects leaders

By Jude Etyang ELECTIONS for representatives to the general assembly of Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) were held yesterday at various mosques in Kampala. The faithful turned up in large numbers at Nakasero, Kibuli, Old Kampala and Wandegeya mosques, among others, to participate in the second phase of electing new leaders at the county level. The general assembly elects the executive of the UMSC of 20 members from whom candidates for the post of Mufti are nominated and elected. Sheik Siriman Kasule won the Kibuli county seat unopposed, Nakasero was taken by Sheik Abdullah Mubiru, while Old Kampala was won by Sheik Mohammed Nyanzi. The elections are expected to end December 8, when the general assembly will be inaugurated. It is expected to end 10 years of leadership wrangles. According to sources, four sheiks have expressed interest in the post of Mufti. They are Sheikh Shaban Mubajje, the Mbale district Khadi, Sheikh Rajab Kakooza, former Chief Khadi, deputy acting Mufti of the UMSC, Old Kampala, Sheik Ahmed Lubega and Sheikh Twaibu Mukuye, the UMSC secretary for religious affairs.
