MUK hosts Rockfeller, Carnegie presidents

MAKERERE University is hosting Dr. Gordon Conway, the president of Rockefeller Foundation, and that of the Carnegie Corporation, Dr. Vartan Gregorian.

By Richard Mutumba MAKERERE University is hosting Dr. Gordon Conway, the president of Rockefeller Foundation, and that of the Carnegie Corporation, Dr. Vartan Gregorian. Conway, who arrived yesterday afternoon, is visiting Makerere University for the second time. He was received by the university Vice-Chancellor, Prof. John Ssebuwufu, and the Director of Africa Initiative Cuny Centre, Cole Dodge. Gregorian was expected yesterday evening. On arrival at Entebbe International Airport, Dr. Conway disclosed that Makerere University would receive a grant of US$2m (sh3.6b) for training and capacity building in districts under decentralisation. The programme, developed jointly by Makerere University and the Government, will involve training in fields like health, management, agriculture, legal system and governance, according to Ssebuwufu. Conway and Gregorian will meet President Museveni and Vice-President Dr. Specioza Kazibwe, deans, directors and students at the university. They will also hold talks with various local council leaders and give public lectures. Both foundations have assisted Makerere University in research and in construction. The Rockefeller Foundation, valued at US$3.5b, has supported the faculties of Agriculture and Medicine. The Carnegie Corporation has supported the Makerere Institute of Education, History Department and library. Ends
