ARUA Municipality MP Hussein Akbar Godi was Tuesday morning remanded to Luzira prison until February 11, 2011.

The MP will re-appear in court on the same day for the verdict.

Trial Judge, Lawrence Gidudu said given the nature of the case and the assessor’s opinion, that Godi should be convicted, it was safer to have him remanded as he was likely to jump bail.

Earlier court assessors had asked the presiding justice Gidudu to convict the lawmaker over the murder of his wife, Rehema Caesar.

Principal state attorney Joan Kagezi said there was overwhelming circumstantial evidence to prove that Godi killed his wife on December 4, 2008.

She said Godi’s actions before and after the murder were strange, saying he called a press conference to clear his name in the media instead of reporting the matter to the Police.

“He (Godi) did not spend the night at his home after the murder. He said he feared to go home, but when asked why, he failed to explain and disclose where he spent the night,” Kagezi said.

She added that forensics experts had adduced strong evidence against Godi. She said the two spent cartridges recovered from the scene came from Godi’s pistol.

The state also submitted that the accused lied to court when he was interrogated, saying he was in Arua on the fateful day, but telephone printouts revealed that he was in Kampala.

Kagezi said a day after the murder, Godi went to the chieftaincy of military intelligence offices with only two bullets in his pistol purposely to replenish the spent ammunitions.
