NATIONAL coach Robert Williamson is optimistic of Cranes’ chances in the Africa Nations Championship despite the fact that team captain Simeon Masaba will miss Saturday’s game against Algeria.

The team is already without defender Edward Ssali, who was diagonised with a heart problem and defender Godfrey Walusimbi, who decided to join the professional ranks before the team’s departure to Sudan.

After yesterday’s morning training, reality sunk in that Masaba was ineligible to play against Algeria after being sent off in the last qualifier in Nairobi when Uganda went down 2-1 to Kenya.

“It is an opportunity for other players to showcase their talent,” said Williamson.

Ssali advises local clubs

Cranes defender Edward Ssali who was ruled out of the Africa Nations Championship in Sudan, yesterday called on domestic clubs to carry out routine medical check-ups for their players.

Referring to his problem, Ssali said, “At first, I asked why me, but now I believe that I am lucky that the ailment was discovered before anything fatal could happen.” “After treatment for two months, I will be able to come back.”

“All clubs should try and see that they check their players for all these ailments.”
