Dear Doctor,
I get pain frequently in my private parts and lower abdomen. My doctor said it was a bacterial infection and gave me medication, but recently I had sex and started bleeding. What causes this? Please advise.

Dear Anonymous,
BLEEDING after intercourse is generally not a good sign and can be alarming.
Pelvic inflammatory diseases cause lower abdominal pains and a little bleeding after sex.

However, you should not limit the situation to that. Though bleeding can be caused by rough sex which leads to vaginal trauma, there are other underlying conditions that might cause bleeding after intercourse.

Conditions such as polyps (swellings) on the cervix, among other conditions that affect the cervix can also spark off post-intercourse bleeding.

Cervical inflammation, also referred to as cervicitis, as well as cervical cancer can cause bleeding.

See a gynaecologist to rule out cancer and establish the cause of bleeding.
