A planned enthronement ceremony for Prince William Gabula Nadiope IV as the Kyabazinga of Busoga has been called off.

The event was cancelled after President Yoweri Museveni failed to honour his invite to grace the ceremony.

The announcement was made by Martin Musumba Mukasa, former Katukiro (prime minister) during a meeting of a section of clan heads at Bugembe Youth centre on Wednesday.

During the meeting, Musumba said the President was unable to grace the occasion because of a busy campaign schedule.

“The President expressed willingness to attend the installation of Gabula. But given the current political wave, he is unable to grace the occasion but said he would give us a different date in the very near future,” Musumba said.

Musumba requested Basoga to remain calm until an alternative date was announced.

“We also want to take this opportunity to unequivocally state that the installation of Gabula does not in any way portend insecurity. Rather, his non-installation may ferment discontent,” he added.

Last month, a section of clan leaders met in Bugembe and set February 11 as the day for the enthronement of Gabula. It would coincide with the traditional Kyabazinga day.

However, following the death of the Kyabazinga Henry Wako Muloki in September 2008, the day has not been celebrated, but only observed by Basoga.

The clan heads have been bitter and have on several occasions accused the eleven hereditary chiefs for lack of credibility to elect a legitimate Kyabazinga from among themselves.

The clan heads also accused the hereditary rulers for abdicating their responsibility by failing to elect a Kyabazinga in time.

They also resolved that if Gabula was not enthroned, then Busoga would cease to exist as a kingdom. “The eleven chiefs can only be there by our popular consent so they cannot impose anybody on us,” a clan head said.
