THE First Lady, Janet Museveni, has welcomed over 300 people who defected from other parties to the NRM in Mbarara Municipality, saying they are now in the right party which stands for unity of all Ugandans.

The people included hawkers, bus and taxi touts, matooke sellers and video and studio operators from the FDC and DP. They publicly announced their allegiance to the NRM party during a meeting with the First Lady and other NRM party officials from Mbarara on Sunday at Lake View Hotel, Mbarara.

Janet reminded them that the three principles for which the National Resistance Army officers sacrificed their lives in the bush were unity, peace and poverty eradication.

She said: “The unity of Uganda is the assurance of our future.”

She commended Mbarara Municipality for exhibiting mature politics, saying that what deters most African countries from developing is the failure of its people to unite and work together.

She implored Ugandans to learn from Tanzania whose people she said became united since independence and have not given room not for anything to divide them hence avoiding strife.

Janet said the NRM Government has worked hard to create a stable Uganda, which today provides a good example for neighbouring countries like Sudan, Somalia and Burundi to build their own nations and urged all NRM supporters to strive to ensure that the country is not ditched back to the dark ages of turmoil.

She challenged all NRM supporters not to relax until they have come out in big numbers and elected all their party’s flag bearers into power to maintain a united, stable and prosperous Uganda which the future generation will be proud of.

Isaac Rwankore, a former DP stalwart who is now preaching the NRM gospel, said the people, especially the business community should ensure that the NRM wins the coming elections, since it has enabled them to do their businesses without any problems.

Pastor Francis Rugumayo, who confessed to having been a member of the DP, UPC and later FDC, said he had now realised that only the NRM is committed to propelling Uganda to greater heights.

The meeting was also addressed by NRM’s flag bearer for Mbarara Municipality, Dr. Bitekyerezo Medard, Malawi’s consul in Uganda, Robert Rukari, and the NRM chairman for Mbarara, Jomo Mugabi, who all requested Ugandans to vote for President Yoweri Museveni and the NRM in appreciation of what he has done for the country for the last 25 years.
