THE National Resistance Movement party secretary general, Amama Mbabazi, has warned that the FDC president, Col. Kizza Besigye, will not be allowed to usurp the power of the people by declaring himself the winner of the just-concluded presidential elections.

Speaking at Namboole stadium shortly after the election results were released, Mbabazi described Besigye as a “bad loser” for refusing to accept defeat.

“The man participated vigorously in the campaign process and went and voted. Then after losing, he makes such statements. The only advice I can give Besigye is that he should retire from politics,” Amama said.

He said whoever was not satisfied with the results could go to court to address their grievances.

“To threaten as he is doing that he will declare himself the winner is not acceptable. We shall not allow him to usurp the power of the people,” Mbabazi warned.

He also said the win did not come as a surprise.

“For any party to win it must have a message for the people and the organisational structure and machinery to deliver this message. That is exactly what we did,” he told journalists.

The NRM candidate Yoweri Museveni was yesterday declared winner of the presidential election.

Museveni polled 68% of the votes cast, while his main rival, Besigye of the Inter Party Cooperation, polled 26% of the 8,272,706 votes cast.

Flanked by the NRM electoral commission chairman Ruhakana Rugunda, party spokesperson Ofwono Opondo and other party officials, Mbabazi congratulated President Museveni upon his victory.

He also congratulated successful party parliamentary flag-bearers.

Mbabazi told journalists that the NRM captured 76% of the positions in Parliament.

He also attributed the win to the support in the northern and eastern regions.

Mbabazi dismissed allegations by the opposition that the NRM bribed voters and challenged whoever had evidence to present it to court.

He regretted that the party lost some constituencies to the opposition and promised they would work towards addressing the weakness that could have been the cause.

The NRM will hold a victory party at Kololo grounds on February 25.

He said the celebration was delayed to allow the party to focus on the local government elections on February 23.
