RICHARD Malinga tapped home a crucial winner that helped KCC top the Ecobank Uganda Super League first round. Malinga calmly placed the ball in at Nakivubo after a fumbling Simba golkeeper Benjamin Ekusai failed to hold a Brian Majwega free-kick a minute to recess.

The Lugogo side reached the half way point with a five point lead. KCC’s quest for a ninth title was strengthened by a goal-less draw by the other contenders URA and Bunamwaya at Lugazi.

Majwega did not score but he was still KCC’s star yesterday. The small midfielder showed comfort on the ball and bravely took on defenders before laying killer passes.

Simba’s skipper Godfrey Wakaza could have got a better result for the army side. He was on three occasions in position to score but was always not quick enough. Burst Kabenge could have also put the soldiers ahead before Malinga struck but his header ended on the woodwork.

In Lugazi second placed Bunamwaya and URA never failed to find the net.

The largely dull match whose second half was played under a heavy downpour, turned bloody when URA’s Habib Kavuma lost two teeth after being elbowed by Derrick Walulya.

Elsewhere Karim Nkugwa scored the all important goal on his debut to give Victors a hard fought win against a resilient 10-man Proline FC in a scrappy encounter in front of a relatively large crowd at Kakindu stadium.

Nkugwa headed in in the 70th minute following a free kick by Sula Ssebbunza. Proline’s Ivan Bukenya was red carded after elbowing Victors striker Yuda Mugalu.
