THE President of the European Commission, Mr José Manuel Durão Barroso, has congratulated President Yoweri Museveni on his victory in last week’s presidential elections.

In a statement on Thursday, Barrosso, on behalf of the European Union (EU) said Ugandans had expressed their political preference and they hoped that under Museveni’s new leadershi, Uganda would continue with poverty eradication for sustainable development.

“Ugandans have had the opportunity to express their political preference at the polls. The European Union remains committed in supporting Uganda’s efforts to eradicate poverty and bring sustainable development.

“We look forward to finding solutions, with you, to the political, social and economic challenges and to promoting peace, development and democracy in Uganda and the region as a whole,” he said.

Barroso said he looked forward to continuing the open and frank dialogue with the Government.

NRM celebrates victory

Yoweri Kaguta Museveni had a pulsating welcome back to the capital Kampala yesteray on his maiden public appearance as the newly elected President.

Museveni braved a ten hour drive from his country home in Ntungamo to Kampala, making various stop-overs at Mbarara, Lyantode, Lwengo, Nyendo and Lukaya where thousands of supporters poured into the streets to congratulate him amidst chants of “Akomyewo Paka Last”.

At national celebrations to mark his victory at Kololo grounds, Museveni expressed his gratitude to the people of Uganda for the trust and confidence they vested in him by re-electing him President for the 2011 – 2016 five-year term. He said this would enable him consolidate the gains and ensure transformation, job creation and industrialization.

He had a sweeping victory in the February 18 polls in which he garnered 68.38 percent of the vote.

SMS messages

As he made stop-overs, supporters were particularly excited that the president took time to ask for their vote individually by phone. He followed that by thanking a the electorate in Uganda for their wise voting through the use of short message services (SMS).

In one of the messages, Museveni says; “Nze Muzeyi owe’kikofiira. Weebale kunonda ne’kibiina kyange ekya NRM. Nsaba tukolere wamu ku lwobulungi bwa Uganda. Tuyoogeyoge ku buwanguzi bwa NRM,” (Am the old man with a hat. I want to thank you for voting for me and my party the NRM. I urged you to work together with me for the good of our country).
