OMAR Muwaya Bongo was last week declared the Mayuge district chairperson-elect, after he defeated six other contestants in the LC5 polls.

According to results declared by the district returning officer, Mary Ekima, Bongo (NRM) garnered 34,936 votes against his closest rival, Stanley Bayole (FDC), who got 25,538 votes.

Culture state minister Rukia Nakadama’s husband, Dauda Isanga Magada, who had contested as an independent, came third with 7,821 votes.

Bongo said he would fight divisions that had kept the district in a disadvantaged position since 2000, when it was curved out of Iganga.

“This district has never kicked-off since we got autonomy. It is time for us to unite and steer our area to development,” he told journalists.

He disclosed plans to revitalise priority sectors like roads, access to clean water, health, education and agricultural modernisation.

Bongo added that a recent report named Busoga region the poorest in the country and Mayuge district stood out prominently, an image he wants to turn around through various interventions.
He called for cooperation from all stakeholders to set the district on course for progress.
