THE jailed Arua Municipality MP, Hussein Akbar Godi, who is currently serving a 25-year prison sentence in Luzira Prison, wants to appeal against his conviction and sentence.

Godi was early last month convicted and sentenced to 25 years after he was found guilty of killing his wife Rehema Caesar in 2008.

In a notice to the Court of Appeal of February 24, three weeks after Mukono High Court found him guilty, Godi notified court that he intends to appeal.

It is not indicated which lawyer filed the notice of appeal on behalf of Godi. MacDosman Kabega represented him in the earlier trial.

“Take notice Hussein Akbar Godi appeals to the Court of Appeal of Uganda against the decision of Justice Lawrence Gidudu that was given at Mukono on the February 11, where the appellant was convicted of murder contrary to section 188 and 189 of the Penal Code,” the notice reads.

Court ruled that prosecution had proved beyond reasonable doubt that Godi killed his wife on December 4, 2008 at Lukojjo village in Mukono district.

Justice Gidudu said prosecution proved that it was Godi’s gun that killed his wife, adding that he had malice aforethought.

He cited the evidence from ballistics and forensic experts, telephone printouts and threats Godi made to his wife.

“The accused planned the murder over time. This conviction has to send a message to those who batter their wives to stop it,” Justice Gidudu stated in his judgement.
