WE often underestimate the power of some exercises basing on their simplicity. When Marie was asked by her fitness trainer to do duck walks as a form of exercise, she laughed in amusement. Marie thought duck walks, where one squats and walks forward and backwards, are mere childish games.

However David Tyaba, a tennis and fitness coach at Makerere University, says if you are up to the challenge and sick of the gym, give your body and mind an exercise that allows you to play as you work out.

Duck walks are a form of aerobic exercises that aid healthy bone density, muscle strength and joint mobility, Tyaba explains. He says the exercise reduces general health risks, boosts the immune system and helps with depression and insomnia.

Tabya says whether the goal is to lose weight or improve muscle mass, duck walk working out promotes a healthy body and mind. Duck walking requires no costly equipment, however, invest in a suitable and comfortable jogging outfit.

“For those in a weight crisis, engage in extra exercises alongside the duck walk such as sit-ups and rope jumping. This increases calorie burning, thus burning more fat,” advises Tyaba.

In addition David Bogere, an aerobics and fitness trainer in Kampala, recommends duck walks for flexibility.
A lot of times people say that duck walking is bad for their knees, however, Dr. Ingrid Igundura. a sports physician at Kiisi Medical Centre in Kampala, explains that people who have pre-existing knee injuries are vulnerable to the exercise.

“Anyone with a joint injury history should not do high impact or vigorous duck walks. But if you do not have any pre-existing knee injuries, duck walks are fine and a cost effective form of fitness,” says Igundura.
Tyaba explains that duck walks are fun and as easy.

How to duck walk
Squat until your thighs are parallel to the ground, stay in the position and start walking .Go about 10 steps and then walk backwards to your starting point.
“Repeat as many times as you can to reach total exhaustion so that fat is burnt and the heart beat rate increases.

This is a perfect cardiovascular and muscle exercising,” Igundura says.
“Duck walks are ideal for muscle stretching, spine fitness and lower body firmness. Nonetheless, duck walks can be performed in the comfort of your home,” he adds.
