UGANDANS should reinstate term limits to save the country from political turmoil, the Archbishop of Kampala Archdiocese, Dr. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga, has said.

He made the remarks while presiding over the re-burial of the remains of the pioneer catholic missionaries at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Mapeera-Nabulagala in Rubaga division on Sunday.

Lwanga said the dangers of lifting term limits were envisaged by Cardinal Emmanuel Wamala.

“The Cardinal warned against lifting the presidential term limits and was attacked by politicians,” he said.

Lwanga advised that the term limits be re-considered to avoid political problems that countries like Kenya, Tunisia, Egypt and Libya have experienced.

He also hailed the Government for maintaining peace during the elections and urged Ugandans to desist from violence.

“For a country to have durable peace, there should be free and fair elections,” he said.

Lwanga urged Ugandans to elect people who would promote reconciliation.

He also encouraged Ugandans to put the nation above self.

Lwanga said the country belonged to everybody and castigated militia groups like Kiboko Squad which terrorise the people.

He said chaotic situations resulted from economic and political inequalities.

Lwanga said politics, ethnicity and culture weredefenseless systems that are always used by politicians to attain selfish goals.

The Kabaka called for more cooperation between the church and the Buganda government. This was in a message delivered by the kingdom prime minister, JB Walusimbi.

The re-buried clerics, who hailed from France, belonged to the Catholic Missionary Society of White Fathers.

The remains included those of Fr. Simeon Loudel Mapeera (1853-1890) and Bro. Delmas Amans (1852-1895), the first Catholic missionaries, to land at Entebbe on February 17, 1879.

Others were Msgr. Leon Livinhac (1846-1921), Fr. Girault Ludovic (1853-1941) and Fr. Leon Barbot (1846-1882).
